细小颗粒、片状或粉末，能溶于水，，无色无味,水溶液有粘性，微混浊，常温下不溶于醇。很长时间加热时，能溶于甘油、丙二醇。质量最好的阿拉伯树胶产自非洲豆科类植物acaCla senegal和acaCla seyal，这两种胶树繁衍生长在非洲北纬10—18度之间撒哈拉地区的“树胶地带”（Gum Belt）。在这一地区，生产树胶的国家有苏丹、乍得、尼日利亚、埃塞俄比亚和塞内加尔，而苏丹产量占80%以上。 原胶按三级分类：手工精选级、清洗级和筛选去杂级。上好的阿拉伯树胶为半透明琥珀色。
