- 暗绿色结晶或粉末，难溶于冷水及醇，加热则易于溶解。带有铜光泽。无气味。在空气中稳定。1g溶于约25ml水、约65ml乙醇，溶液为天蓝色，溶于氯仿，不溶于乙醚和苯, 水溶液遇锌粉和稀硫酸能褪色，但暴露空气中能恢复，若加氨水则恢复更快。能与多数无机盐生成复盐。最大吸收波长668、609nm。。低毒，半数致死量(大鼠，经口)1180mg/kg。稍溶于酒精则呈蓝色；遇浓硫酸呈黄光绿色；稀释后呈蓝色；水溶液中加入氢氧化钠溶液后呈紫色或出现暗紫色沉淀。亚甲基蓝指示剂还原态呈无色，氧化态呈蓝色、性质敏感
