无气味，微甜而有涩味、有收敛性。在干燥空气中风化失去结晶水，在潮湿空气中溶化淌水。易溶于甘油，能溶于水，水溶液呈酸性反应，水解后有氢氧化铝胶状物沉淀。不溶于醇和丙酮。60～65℃硫酸干燥时失去9分子水，在200℃时十二个结晶水完全失去，更高温度分解出三氧化硫。
